DAT-Report 2021 Marktforschung Automobilindustrie

The end consumer’s perception of car purchase and workshop behavior

The DAT Report has been published since 1974 and, since then, has been a reliable, neutral source of information on consumer behavior regarding the purchase of used and new cars as well as the workshop business. It is regarded as a standard work in the automotive industry and provides representative information on attitudes to cars in Germany in a unique form year after year. The DAT Report has made the market behavior of German motorists transparent and tangible.

The report is aimed in particular at automotive companies, manufacturers, importers, and suppliers, as well as the media, politicians and automotive associations. It also serves as a source of information for trainees and students within the automotive industry and as a basis for strategic decisions.

Chapter 1: Status quo

The year 2021 will go down in history as the second year of the pandemic. In political terms, it was the year dominated by the election campaign in Germany and the formation of a new government. The political weight of these drives – especially electrified cars – is even reflected in the new German government’s coalition agreement. On p. 27, we read: “We are making Germany the lead market for…

Chapter 3: Buying a car

The year 2021 was still dominated by the challenges that had prevailed in 2020 – but on a different scale. At the beginning of November 2020, a ‘light’ lockdown was declared, then in December 2020, the Federal Government under Angela Merkel published new measures designed to combat Covid. This resulted in an almost six-month lockdown through to May 2021, which effectively shut down the automotive retail trade. This meant that the first half of 2021 was once again affected by…

Chapter 4: Car owner as a garage customer

From the perspective of the garages, 2021 was a very
mixed year. Although 75% of all car owners took their
vehicle to a garage at least once, the lower annual
mileage meant there were fewer wear-and-tear repairs
that needed carrying out. Car owners also…
